Pine County is Minnesota Zone I — the most severe frost designation in the state. That matters for demolition because foundations and below-grade structure elements don’t come apart easily when the ground around them is frozen solid.
From November through April, Askov’s frost locks footings, basement walls, and buried utility connections into hardened ground. Above-grade demolition can proceed through most of a northern Minnesota winter. Below-grade work — foundation removal, utility capping, site excavation — depends on frost depth and ground conditions that change week to week through the shoulder seasons.
Askov’s structures reflect the community’s history — Danish-American farmsteads, early 20th-century rural buildings, and agricultural structures across Partridge Township that have reached the end of their useful life. These are the projects that show up along the MN-23 and I-35 corridor regularly: older structures being cleared for new builds, land consolidation, and rural property rebuilding.
Tollefson Excavating has 12 years of experience working Pine County’s ground. We know how to sequence demolition around Minnesota’s frost calendar — and we bring the right equipment for what’s below grade, not just what’s visible from the road.

We had some driveway work done and are so happy with the result! Connor returned calls quickly, came out and got us a quote and did the work as soon as road restrictions lifted!! We were out of town when he did the work and he sent us pictures of the progress! He even fixed a walkway issue without adding any cost! Highly recommend Tollefson excavating! I hired Tollefson to excavate my garage site (on a hill in Duluth) and remove three tree stumps from site. He did a great job, was easy to communicate with, came out an extra time and fixed an error made when marking site (not his error - contractor error), and made sure my back-fill happened before freeze up! He even seeded and put straw over when he was done.Posted on Google![]()

We hired Tollefson Excavating to dig out our existing pond, which had become overgrown and was turning into an eyesore. Conner completely revitalized it, and the results far exceeded our expectations! The pond looks so much cleaner now, and our family is excited to be able to use it. His skill with an excavator really showed, and he did quality work from start to finish. Overall, we had a great experience working with Conner and would highly recommend Tollefson Excavating to anyone looking for dirt work at a fair price.Posted on Google![]()

My wife and I felt comfortable right away after meeting Conner at our new home construction site. Not only did he do a fantastic job with site clearing, excavating and grading our new home site, Conner was there at our site the day he said he would be there. That was huge. I will highly recommend Conner to anyone looking for a reliable excavator.
From residential projects to commercial developments, we provide end-to-end solutions for every stage of construction.
Minnesota Gopher State One Call is required before any excavation in the state. In Pine County’s rural addresses, utility infrastructure isn’t always clearly marked at the surface. We call Gopher State on every job, confirm all services are located, and coordinate disconnection of gas, electric, water, and sewer before any structure comes down. Skipping this step doesn’t save time. It creates incidents that shut jobs down.
Pre-demolition assessment on any pre-1980 structure includes checking for asbestos, lead paint, and other regulated materials. Askov’s older rural buildings and farmsteads carry this risk — abatement is coordinated before demolition proceeds when hazardous materials are identified.
Permits are identified and handled upfront. Pine County and Minnesota requirements vary by project scope — no surprises mid-job from missing approvals.
Demolition covers the full scope: full teardowns, selective demolition, concrete slab and foundation removal. All debris is hauled off. Backfill and compaction where needed, final grade set clean.
Twelve years in Pine County. We’ve worked these structures. We know what they take.
An Askov-area property owner along the MN-23 corridor needed a vacant residential structure demolished and the lot cleared for a new build. Pre-demolition assessment on the older structure confirmed no hazardous materials requiring abatement. We called Gopher State, coordinated utility disconnections, pulled the required Pine County permits, demolished the structure, removed the foundation, and backfilled the lot to a clean finish. Site ready for new construction on schedule.
A Partridge Township landowner needed an aging barn and deteriorated granary cleared from a rural property. Both structures required careful sequencing around frozen ground conditions during an early spring project window. We assessed ground conditions before mobilizing below-grade work, demolished both structures, hauled all material off site, and graded the cleared area back to usable agricultural ground within the project timeline.

Above-grade demolition works through most of a northern Minnesota winter. Below-grade foundation removal depends on frost depth — we assess conditions and sequence the work accordingly rather than forcing frozen ground.
Yes — all included. Foundation removed, debris hauled off, backfill and compaction where needed, final grade set. You get a clean, stable site — not just a cleared footprint.
Yes. Pre-1980 structures in Pine County commonly contain asbestos and lead paint. We assess before demolition begins and coordinate abatement with licensed contractors when hazardous materials are identified.
Yes — every job, no exceptions. Rural addresses in Pine County don’t always have clearly marked utility infrastructure. Gopher State is called and utilities confirmed disconnected before any structure comes down.
Yes. We work throughout Askov, Partridge Township, and Pine County — farm structures, residential demolition, and rural lot clearing along the MN-23 and I-35 corridor and beyond.
