Dirt Work & Excavating Services in Askov, Minnesota

Why Trust Our Dirt Work & Excavating in Askov, Minnesota?

Askov sits in a part of Pine County where the ground doesn’t behave the same way from one lot to the next. This is one of the few areas in Minnesota where karst occurs in sandstone rather than limestone, and Askov itself is referenced in state geologic studies as an example site for that fractured sandstone karst. That means subsurface voids and drainage features can exist in places that show no sign of it at the surface.

That’s the starting point. What comes after it is where local knowledge matters.

Pine County’s glacial history adds another layer — moraines, outwash plains, and till plains sit side by side here, and drift thickness varies significantly across short distances. Sandy, well-drained ground can sit right next to dense till or poorly-drained organic soil. An excavation plan built on surface appearance alone can run into conditions at depth that weren’t expected.

Along MN-23 and near I-35, throughout Pine County and Partridge Township, we’ve excavated for foundations, site prep, and drainage work on ground that changes character from one end of a property to the other.

Tollefson Excavating has worked this terrain across Pine County for years. We know what’s actually down there.

We had some driveway work done and are so happy with the result! Connor returned calls quickly, came out and got us a quote and did the work as soon as road restrictions lifted!! We were out of town when he did the work and he sent us pictures of the progress! He even fixed a walkway issue without adding any cost! Highly recommend Tollefson excavating! Pleasure to work with!!

I hired Tollefson to excavate my garage site (on a hill in Duluth) and remove three tree stumps from site. He did a great job, was easy to communicate with, came out an extra time and fixed an error made when marking site (not his error - contractor error), and made sure my back-fill happened before freeze up! He even seeded and put straw over when he was done.

We hired Tollefson Excavating to dig out our existing pond, which had become overgrown and was turning into an eyesore. Conner completely revitalized it, and the results far exceeded our expectations! The pond looks so much cleaner now, and our family is excited to be able to use it. His skill with an excavator really showed, and he did quality work from start to finish. Overall, we had a great experience working with Conner and would highly recommend Tollefson Excavating to anyone looking for dirt work at a fair price.

My wife and I felt comfortable right away after meeting Conner at our new home construction site. Not only did he do a fantastic job with site clearing, excavating and grading our new home site, Conner was there at our site the day he said he would be there. That was huge. I will highly recommend Conner to anyone looking for a reliable excavator.

What Makes Our Dirt Work & Excavating in Askov, Minnesota, Efficient and Reliable?

Excavation on variable glacial terrain starts with knowing what’s beneath the surface — not assuming it’s consistent across the site.

Minnesota Gopher State One Call is required before any excavation in the state, and we call it on every job — residential, commercial, and everything in between, before equipment ever mobilizes.

Site assessment follows. We evaluate soil composition, drainage patterns, and indicators of karst or bedrock features specific to Pine County’s sandstone geology, since what a site looks like at two feet and what it looks like at six feet aren’t always the same story here.

Excavation proceeds to the required depth and footprint — foundation pads, utility corridors, drainage trenches, and site prep each have their own specifications, and we dig to spec, not to approximation.

Spoil is managed as we go, stockpiled for reuse where suitable and hauled off where it isn’t. Backfill is compacted in lifts, and final grade is set for proper drainage given the variable soil conditions common to this ground.

We’ve worked Pine County long enough to plan for what’s down there before we start.

Case Studies

Dump truck delivering gravel.

A homebuilder near Askov along the MN-23 corridor needed foundation excavation on a lot with no prior soil survey. Site assessment identified a transition from sandy outwash to denser till partway across the footprint. We adjusted the excavation approach to account for the change, reached stable bearing conditions at the correct depth, and delivered a foundation pad without mid-job surprises.

Dump truck delivering gravel.

A property owner in Partridge Township needed site excavation for a new outbuilding on ground with poor natural drainage in one section. We assessed the site’s soil variability, excavated to the required depth, and graded to direct runoff away from the structure. The finished site has drained properly through subsequent wet seasons with no standing water issues.

FAQs About Dirt Work & Excavating Work in Askov

It’s possible, since Pine County has documented sandstone karst features and variable glacial drift. We assess for indicators during the site visit and adjust the plan if conditions change at depth.

Depends on scope, depth, and soil conditions specific to your site. We quote after assessing the property, since ground conditions here vary significantly from lot to lot.

One crew handles both. We do excavation, grading, backfill, compaction, and final grade in-house, so the site is finished correctly without a handoff between contractors.

Yes, on every job. It’s required by Minnesota law, and skipping it risks utility strikes that can cost far more than the excavation itself.

Yes. We handle residential foundation excavation, site prep, utility trenching, and drainage excavation across Askov and Pine County, scaled to the project.
